One thing that puzzles me about humans is their near universal condemnation of sexual promiscuity. If not for the will of humans to control our numbers we'd move unabashedly from one mate to the next and not bat an eye. There is no is-ought gap that burdens our collective conscience here in Dogdom. Promiscuity is a well worn strategy for evolutionary success, but many humans have been made uncomfortable by this discovery. But today I
read that some of them are coming to grips with it. Well, sort of. Yet I have to wonder how long it will take for bewildered housewives and girlfriends to attack the gene-centrists and neo-Darwinists, who have given men a convenient argument with which to excuse their innate urges -- "
It's in my genes, honey!" Some evolutionary psychologists have offered notably non-parsimonious arguments for how morality is actually part of humans' evolutionary strategy. It's hard for me to understand why nature would need a more successful
strategy than promiscuity. Oh well, arguments come and go. For the time being anyway the mystery of the genesis of all of us remains comfortably safe from discovery.
