Who needs taxes? Let's just start the voluntary 'Alaska Guilt Fund'
I have an idea -- and I think it can work -- for maintaining the present level of state government without subjecting us to more taxes (and, in fact, may be beneficial!) Best of all, it fits my libertarian principles, which call for voluntary payment for services that one wants rather than taxes at gunpoint.
The state forms a nonprofit corporation under the Department of Revenue to maintain a dedicated bank account -- call it the "Alaska Guilt Fund" -- into which those of us who feel the have not invested enough in our excellent state can send as many tax deductible dollars as they can stand until the guilt goes away. The proceeds from this account, minus nominal operating expenses, would go into the state treasury. One could even set up payroll deduction to the fund, like United Way, or use automatic credit-card payment and get airline miles to boot. One could choose levels of giving, and maybe earn the title "friend of the state" or "supporter of our children."
If I choose to run for political office this year -- and I just might -- I will feature this plan in my campaign.
